Glossary

Aerodynamics Study of how to reduce air resistance to improve speed and efficiency.
Rental agency Place where bikes can be hired, collected and returned.
Allure Speed at which a cyclist is travelling.
Anti-theft device : safety device that locks the bike when it is parked.

Bracket Combination of chainrings and sprockets that determines pedalling difficulty.
Tread Part of the tyre in contact with the road.
Stand Support to keep the bike upright when parked.
Quick lock Mechanism for quickly attaching or detaching wheels without tools.

Padlock Security device to lock the bike and prevent theft.
Frame triangle-shaped structure that supports the bike's components.
Speed Number of pedal revolutions per minute.
Cassette A set of sprockets that allow you to change gear according to the terrain and the effort made by the cyclist.
Helmet Protective head gear, recommended when hiring bikes.
Channel The element that transmits pedalling force to the wheels.
Inner tube A rubber bag placed inside the tyre, which inflates with air to maintain the shape of the tyre.
Cyclist Cyclist: a person who practices cycling, i.e. the use of a bicycle as a means of transport, for leisure, sport or competition. The term encompasses a wide variety of activities and contexts related to cycling.
Cross-country (XC) Races over a variety of terrain, focusing on speed and endurance.

Derailleur Mechanism that allows you to change gear by moving the chain from one sprocket or chainring to another.
Steering bushing Part of the frame that houses the fork and headset.
Downhill Fast, technical descents on specially prepared trails, requiring very sturdy bikes with high suspension.
Rental period Period for which the bike is hired, which can vary from one hour to several days or weeks.

Safety equipmenté: Accessories supplied with the bike, such as helmet, reflective waistcoat, lights and horn.
Efficiency of pedalling : Measures the effectiveness of the force applied to the pedals.
Enduro Endurance races with technical descents and timed climbs.

Fat bike A type of all-terrain bike designed for use on loose, unstable surfaces such as snow, sand, mud and rocky terrain. It is distinguished by its extremely wide tyres, which offer great buoyancy and excellent traction.
Fork Part of the bicycle that holds the front wheel and allows the bike to be steered.
Brakes System for slowing or stopping the bike.
Rental form Document that the tenant must complete and sign to formalise the rental agreement.

Handlebars part of the bicycle that allows the rider to steer the bike.
Gravel A type of bike designed to be ridden on a variety of surfaces, including unpaved roads and paths, dirt tracks, gravel paths and forest tracks.
Geometry Shape and dimensions of the bicycle frame that affect its handling and comfort.

Stay cable Tubes that connect the frame's rear dropouts to the seat tube.

Rim Outer part of the wheel on which the tyre is mounted.

Bike hire A service that lets you hire a bike for a fixed period.
Long-term leasing : Hire a bike for an extended period, generally more economical in the long term.
Chain line Chain alignment between chainring and sprocket.
Lights Front and rear lighting, essential for safety, especially in low-light conditions.

Cranks Arms to which the pedals are attached.
Brand Identification of the model and manufacture of the bike.
Hub Spokes: central part of the wheel that rotates around the axle and to which the spokes are attached.
Maintenance Maintenance and repairs required to keep the bike in good working order.
